HISTORY (Takuya's music history)
The second album BUGRIGHT has come out!
I: Before, you said that music was your hobby, but how about now?
T: Yeah. Some songs I had a lot of trouble writing, but others I didn't. For example, writing lyrics used to be so hard for me. But recently, the words just come out one after another. Now I just have difficulty choosing words and deciding which one is the right one.
I: That's good, though.
T: Yes. Before, the lyrics weren't as important to me. The whole track put together was more important then just the lyrics. Soon, I wanted to write better lyrics, so I started paying more attention to my feelings and daily events. The words started coming to me more quickly.
I: You're right about the lyrics, but I think that your singing has been getting stronger and stronger. I think your methods of writing have changed over time. Do you think your views have changed at all?
T: I wonder... I haven't paid much attention. Before, I liked music with complicated structures, so I had alot of complicated songs. Little by little, I've gotten tired of them. Right now I want to play simpler expressions. If I get tired of that, I might go back to the more complicated songs.
I:What was it like when you first started playing music?
T: I didn't think about these things at all. I first thought about being in a band during my first year in junior high. Some third year's were playing in front of my school. The vocalist was my older sister, and the bass player was Nobuto's older brother.
I: Oh, OK. (laughs)
T: Yeah. The next day, Nobuto, a friend named Hideki, and I said "Let's start a band!" At first, I played the guitar.
I: When did you start writing?
T: During my first year of junior high. I started writing right after I formed the band. At that time, I thought, "We can debut!" 'Boxing Ring,' 'Wine Glass at 4AM;' These were the songs, but eventually I realized I didn't have any talent in writing. (laughs)
After that I just played music from BOOWY and Buck-Tick. Nunoi-san was my hero. I repainted my first guitar with his color.
I: When did you stop copying music and start playing your original songs?
T: I didn't attend high school but started living alone, and started working. With Ozaki-san's effect, I played, talked, and made songs. But I became a skate board and surfing nerd and didn't play the guitar for almost 3 years. I got tired of those, and just killed time. I didn't even have a job. Having freedom and having nothing to do are different things. I realized that I wasn't 'free', and asked some friends to come to the studio with me. I think that was when I was 19.
I: So you sort of went to a studio on impulse, and now you're there for good.
T: At that time, I was a drummer, and I continued for about 2 more years. I first did the vocal after I turned 20. Around that time, I became serious about making music. High status was popular then. I listened to indies CDs a lot, and I was making about 3 songs each week. At first, I was making songs I wanted to listen to.
I: With your 1st album, I had the impression that your band had your own style. But then I listened to the 2nd one, and thought you guys are in the middle of changing still.
T: I think that if you can't make a better song the second time, you don't need to make the second one. I should quit if I can't make better songs than my previous ones. No stimulation is nothing. That happened with skate board and surfing. Same goes with music. There must be people who feel nothing listening to the current album, but some people might feel their life has changed because of it. I was that serious in making it. I wrote my true feelings. So, I believe that feeling will be conveyed to people who listen to my music consciously. The first album might have been more for self-satisfaction. This one is more to convey the music. Just like my life changed by Yutaka Ozaki's music, I want to change people's lives.
I: Does this change in your work also mean there is growth for you as a human being?
T: The way I think is changing. This album isn't going to change the world, I know that. But I just want to share my music. I'm moved by my own music. It's the truth, I can't lie about. Music gives a lot of stimulation, and I feel confident I can do more. Lately, I've felt that I can never stop music. I've had a lot of different jobs and hobbies, and always felt that something wasn't right. I finally found music. These days I feel good about ending my life with it. Near the end, it would be great if I can play the akogi while drinking and listening to music in Shimokita. (smile)
UVERfamily
T: This time let's talk about Nobuto's problems. Our first example is from when we were on the airplane. Nobuto put the earphones on upside down, and he was so upset because they felt so uncomfortable.
N: Yeah, I was pretty mad.
T: He also holds his knife and fork in the opposite hands.
I: Hold the knife in your left, fork in your right? That sounds hard.
N: Because I'm left handed!!
T: We've been together since kindergarten, but I had no idea he was a lefty.
N: I'm left handed! You can ask my family. When I was little, I always used my left hand. Even now, my left hand is stronger.
T: No, in arm wrestling he always loses, no matter which hand.
I: He's bad at both?
K: No matter how he holds his knife and fork, he always looks like he's having problems.
N: THAT'S OK. I'm Japanese. It's like putting on shoes.
I: Oh, they're related?
N: Do you always put your right shoe on first? I always do my left shoe first, so that means I'm a lefty.
T: Ok, that's enough. Nobuto, let's talk about you and meat.
I: What is this story?
T: Nobuto says that he's a vegetarian.
I: What?
T: I don't know. But, at Yoshigyu, he eats two servings of beef and salmon dinner.
N: It makes a difference to eat quality meat.
I: Yoshigyu? That's not quality...
K: He even puts on sweaters inside out. He wears them backwards, too. It has to be uncomfortable..
T: That's a big one...
N: That's my life.
